Avon High School Earns Attention for Academic and Artistic Achievements

In the span of a couple of weeks this fall, Avon High School (AHS) learned it had been honored by the US Department of Education as a 2023 National Blue Ribbon School and then celebrated a victory by the Avon Marching Black & Gold at both Indiana State School Music Association Marching Band Championships and the Bands of America Grand National Championships.

The 2023 National Blue Ribbon School recognition is based on the school’s overall academic performance. AHS is one of 353 schools in the nation to be recognized this year and one of only eight public schools in Indiana to earn the distinction. This is a rare honor for a public high school; on average, only 15% of public schools awarded are high schools.

“I could not be prouder of the team we have built, the students who make our school such a special place, and the work we have been doing together at AHS,” says AHS Principal Matt Shockley. “Our staff sets and meets high expectations in creating an environment in which all students know they’re safe, welcomed, and cared for. This helps students succeed not only in the classroom, but artistically, athletically, socially, and more.”

Not long after learning of the school’s selection as a National Blue Ribbon School, the Avon Marching Black & Gold completed their season earning state and national titles. This is the band’s fourth Bands of America Grand National Championship. The Avon Marching Black and Gold have appeared on the podium at the Bands of America competition each year (with the exception of 2020 when the competition was canceled) since 2007, including a string of three consecutive victories in 2008, 2009, and 2010. During that unprecedented run of success, they brought home five bronze medals for third place and seven silver medals for second place, making AMBG a model for high school marching bands across the nation.

Avon Schools Superintendent, Dr. Scott Wyndham, a regular band competition attendee, says, "The Avon Marching Black & Gold students and staff work so hard and are great representatives of our school district bringing pride to the entire Avon community. I’m so proud of their success this year and their tradition of excellence!”

“We are Avon. We are one. That is our rallying cry here at AHS,” says Shockley. “Our entire school and community is excited to celebrate these achievements as one.”
