Meet the District III Superintendent of the Year

Rossville Superintendent Named IAPSS Superintendent of the Year for Dist. III

ROSSVILLE, IND – September 25, 2023 -- Dr. James Hanna, superintendent of Rossville Consolidated School District, has been named 2024 Superintendent of the Year for District III by the Indiana Association of Public School Superintendents (IAPSS).

Winners are selected by other superintendents in their district who consider the qualifications and accomplishments of area colleagues and their instructional leadership in a time of limited resources.

Rossville Consolidated School District is a rural district serving 932 students in one facility.

Hanna has served as superintendent of Rossville Consolidated School District since 2000. Under Hanna’s leadership, the district has focused on providing opportunities for students and preparing them for the future. Hanna has encouraged administrators to seek out educators who are highly effective and credentialed to provide student instruction, regardless of their experience. The district has expanded its offerings from 28 dual-credit courses in 2018 to 39 in the fall of 2023. During the same time, the district expanded AP course offerings from four to seven, and added an additional vocational agriculture teacher.

Hanna has made a concerted effort to provide students with a safe learning environment by developing safety protocols and enhancing emergency response practices. This includes forming the district’s own police department and developing an emergency response team consisting of law enforcement personnel, firefighters, and EMTs. Nearly all staff are trained in CPR\AED, bleeding control and suicide prevention. A recent survey confirmed that 97% of students and 98% of the staff felt the school was safe.  

Hanna earned his Bachelor of Science, Master of Education and his Ph.D. from Indiana State University.
